Fires in the workplace are one of the most dangerous workplace hazards. At least 200 workers die and 5000 workers are injured in workplace fires every year. Fires can bankrupt a company, destroy buildings, shut down operations, and have a significant fiscal impact.
The fire hazards that occur during cutting operations involve jobs that create sparks and heat. Always be aware of the following potential hazards around a machining shop:
Oily rags left close to flammable materials can ignite. That’s why it’s essential to ensure rags are disposed of properly – in a receptacle with a closed lid. Oily rags in open containers can spontaneously erupt, even without being close to fire or sparks.
It’s also key to be aware that flawed or damaged wires and switches can get extremely hot, causing some materials to catch fire.
These risky situations can be avoided – or at least managed – by cleaning up debris, establishing effective ventilation systems, and fixing old electric or investing in new electrical equipment.
