C-N-C machines require you to keep your body parts away from the point of operation. If an operator attempts to adjust parts while the machine is in operation, they may get hurt or damage to the machine. This means all C-N-C machines have machine guards that prevent access to the point of operation and other hazardous areas while the machine is working. There are several types of protective barriers and safety systems on C-N-C machines:

One type of physical barrier is a fixed guard. It is an immovable barrier that allows feed stock to be fed into the machine from a safe distance. However, fixed guards need to be removed when the machine needs maintenance.

C-N-C machines also come equipped with an interlock switch. This switch ensures that the machine cannot start if the door is open. While most CNC machines can be programmed to allow operators to override the interlock switch, this is strongly discouraged, as it is extremely unsafe.

Both machine components and tooling need to be at a complete stop before you change parts or tooling.
