Any cutting process requires the safe operation of all tools and workpieces. Tool blades need to be sharp because a dull blade can be extremely unsafe. Even appropriately sharp blades can create cuts or abrasions when not used correctly. To combat these dangers, many sharp blades are layered in hot wax. The wax protects the operator from getting cut.
Tools need to be kept clean and stored in their correct place, like in your shop’s tool bed or tool room. If not cared for properly, tools may injure workers or damage machines.
If you need to change or adjust a tool you’re using, the machine needs to be off and at a complete stop. Tools need to be adjusted in their toolholders before putting them on the spindle. A loose tool may come free during use, causing damage or injury. It’s also important to keep the machine free of extraneous objects – if you forget your wrench after making adjustments, it may fly free and hit someone or damage something.
