Atoms tend to combine with each other in order to form molecules. Strong primary bonds hold molecules together. These bonds depend on the actions of the atoms’ valence electrons. The way that electrons interact in the molecule identifies the sort of primary bond that will form between atoms. Ionic bonds are formed when one atom gives up a valence electron to fill another atoms shell. These two elements combine together to form a molecule. Table salt is an example of a molecule held by ionic bonds. Covalent bonds are made when two atoms share valence electrons. These shared electrons complete the outer shell of both atoms at the same time. Water is an example of molecule with covalent bonds.
