Machine operation variables aren’t all resolved at once. Each operation needs to be able to focus on three essential variables equally: speed, feed, and depth of cut are all important to make machining efficient.
The depth of cut affects the speed of the tool most, and the tool life the least. The dimensions of the material usually determine the depth of cut, so this variable is less flexible. Most operations will need at least one or more times through the material to work. The next variable to consider is the feed rate. Speed is typically considered the least important variable because it has the least effect on tool wear.
