Conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss are the major types of hearing loss. Sometimes, conductive hearing loss that occurs in the outer ear can be fixed medically or surgically. People with this type of hearing damage typically can only hear certain levels of sound. Conductive hearing loss can also occur due to an irregular growth, fluid in the ear, wax in the ear canal, or infections that can break or scar the eardrum. Some chemicals or medications can also cause damage conductive hearing loss. Occupational conductive hearing loss is unlikely to happen but is certainly not unheard of. A hit to the head, or a hot piece of debris in the ear may cause loss of hearing or damage to the ear.
