1020 – 04 – How Cold Saws Work

Cold saws use a circular saw blade that cuts metal. Their name is derived from their process of cutting. When a cold saw cuts material, it transfers any heat that it generates from the process into the chips that are expelled from the saw. This leaves the material and the saw cold — unlike standard saws that don’t employ this process.

Typically, shops use a high speed steel saw blade or a tungsten carbide-tipped blade. This, alongside a gear reduction unit, lowers the saw blades rotation but gives it high torque. This gives the saw a high chip rate. There are no sparks or dust emitted during the process, and no discoloration. Cold Saws need a flood coolant system to keep the saw blades lubricated. Some carbide saw blades such as the Qsaw Blades displayed on the video require no coolant.
