Every machining operation has an optimal setting for a set of three cutting variables. Speed is the rate at which a cutting tool moves through the surface of a workpiece past the point of first contact. Feed is the rate at which the whole cutting tool moves along the whole cut and depth of cut is the thickness of the material that can be sliced through with one cut.
