The most important job of the tooth is to cut through the material. One of the major factors affecting the tooth is its shape, especially near its edge. Tooth shape is created by the tooth back clearance angle, the tooth rake angle, and its gullet depth. The right tooth shape can also improve blade life, reduce noise levels, contribute to the smoothness of a cut, and boost chip carrying capacity.
The back side of the tooth forms the tooth back clearance angle. It’s measured in comparison to the cutting angle. The tooth rake angle is the angle of the tooth face. The gullet, and how deep it is, regulates chip size. When the gullet reaches capacity, it needs to stop cutting and move away from the workpiece, so it can dump out its contents. A deeper gullet makes for longer cuts.
