One of the most common types of band saw blade is the carbon blade. It is usually made with one economical material. This means it tends to break quicker than many other blades. They are still effective in certain types of work. There are three typical types of carbon blades.

A Hard edge, such as the Q101 flexible back has had one of its one edges heat-treated.

A Hard edge, such as the Q201 hard back blade is a fully heat-treated piece of metal. It uses friction for heat generation.

As a rule, flexible back blades tend to have longer lives, and are more cost-effetive. But carbon hard-back blades are generally more suitable for larger feed pressure.
