Sawing is one of the more typical shop operations that cut metal. Its main purpose is to prep materials for other machining operations. It can also shape and contour parts.
The four main types of sawing are hacksawing, circular sawing, friction sawing, and band sawing. All four of the types include many characteristics that are alike, for example they use a multiple-tooth blade that gets rid of chips and makes a slit in the material.
Each different type of saw blade has a specific terminology to describe its composition. The gage and width determine the blade size and shape. The gullet is the space in between the teeth.
Saw blades have different ways their teeth are arranged and how they are shaped. Tooth shape is made up of it’s tooth rake angle, tooth back clearance angle, and gullet depth. There is also tooth form, which is the shape and angles of the tooth and tooth set, the repeated bending of teeth.
Saw blades are created from a variety of materials. Carbon blades are cheap long lasting blades. Bi-metal blades combine two separate styles of steel. Carbide blades have extremely hard tooth tips. Which blade to use depends on a variety of factors including its material, hardness, and size.
