The periodic table contains more than 100 elements. Elements are arranged based on how many protons they have, beginning with those elements that have the lowest number to highest number of protons. Hydrogen, which has one proton, is located at the top left of the table. With this arrangement, there are seven horizontal rows called periods. The vertical columns, which represent groups of elements, have almost identical numbers of electrons in their outer shells. This indicates that they will react very similarly to the same conditions, whether those conditions are physical or chemical. With knowledge of the periodic table, you can discern its hands-on benefits. The arrangement of groups tells you which elements can replace other elements when making alloys. For example, Molybdenum could substitute from chromium because they are in group 6 on the table.
