While primary bonds hold atoms together, molecules attracted each other with a weaker kind of bond: secondary bonds. Secondary bonds are not as strong as primary bonds. They are periodic and temporary and are far more likely to break apart than primary bonds. Once an electron is borrowed or shared, another force is required to alter the link. Chewing gum can be a good example of the different types of molecular bonds. Primary bonds are what hold the gum’s ingredients together, while the secondary bond would be how the gum remains altogether in one piece as opposed to two or three.
