2050 – 06 – Defining Casting & Ingots

While both furnaces are used to make steel in its molten form, if the steel is to be refined more, it needs to solidify in ingot molds.

Created from high-carbon iron, ingot molds are bigger at one end to make removing the steel easier. This type of shape is called a big-end-down mold. Steel can be removed from the mold once it cools. Ingots can be from 1 ton up to 300 tons in weight.
