It is common knowledge that steel is one of the most widely-used commercial metals. Steel is very strong, relatively cheap and has a variety of uses. No other type of metals has as large number of uses or benefits.

In fact, there are a wide variety of steels: Plain carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steels, tool steels and high-strength low-alloy steels. And that’s just a small sample size. Even among the aforementioned steels, there is a wide range of grades.

Classifying these metals helps figure out what sort of properties a metal might have.
