3010 – 11 – Knowing the Types of Hard Hats
There are a wide variety of hard hats that have many uses. ANSI standards characterize hard hats by their impact protection. Type I hard hats protect against top-only impact. Type II hard hats protect all sides of the helmet, and both types protect against falling objects breaking through.
There are more types within Type I and Type II by electrical insulation rating:
• Class G hard hats which protect up to 2,200 volts.
• Class E hard hats offer the best protection up to 20,000 volts
• Class C have no protection to electrical hazards
A bump hat is another type of hard hat that covers the workers heads from bumps and cuts. They are not ANSI approved and they look like normal hard hats.
