A company has multiple processes that regulate the way the shop designs, purchases, machines, inspects, and transports parts.

All processes change in order to accommodate the wearing down of machine tools wear down, the range of content and quality in materials, and changing temperature. Shops have next to no control over many of these variations in process.

Some process variations can be pinpointed and stamped out. Workers can figure out if a certain machine is not performing as it should. They’ll note whether machine operators occasionally make mistakes, or if the material is faulty.

The best processes can get rid of variation and recognize imperfections before they become issues. The goal is to make a part right the first time.
