Once the product has been designed, it needs to be produced. Hopefully, each step in the production process will give the product a new layer of value. But, each step also represents a new way the product could be damaged.
Achieving a quality product requires an organization-wide effort not to vary from the appropriate processes. People need to be vigilant, but they will make mistakes. Some of these defects will come from human error but other parts will be due to machines, materials, or missteps in the process. Management should ask workers to improve if the variation can be traced to their human error – not if it’s out of their control.
